Two months ago I set sail in a little boat to find the end of the world. And I found it. And promptly fell off the edge.

I did not intend to go on such a long hiatus. I love my blog and my blog followers and all my interweb friends. I love YouTube videos and memes and cat gifs. But I needed to unplug in the worst way. My brain was completely fried and in trying to care about everyone around me, I found I didn’t have enough left for myself.

Queue up a tiny, sad violin. This isn’t abnormal for me. I struggle every summer with blogger burnout. It happens. I had a really fantastic summer though and aside from getting unexpectedly sick and getting poked with a needle an unforgivable number of times, I thoroughly enjoyed myself. I started several new projects, two of which I can’t talk about, and wrote almost 50,000 awesome, edited superhero words. Just so we’re clear, while I maybe watched a lot of TV, I also wrote several thousand words a day. (Hip hip hooray for one particularly incredible 16,000 word weekend!)

Speaking of TV, there are some really fantastic shows on right now, particularly in the sci-fi universe. Alphas, anyone? Come on now, you didn’t think I wouldn’t pine after this show, did you? *love*

For the record, I also gorged myself on Leverage, Warehouse 13, Revenge, Scandal, Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead, Army Wives, and Pretty Little Liars.

In my personal opinion, Army Wives has some of the best character development I’ve ever seen and Leverage scores big for best dialogue.

I’ve watched the first two episodes of Revolution and all I can say is, CLEANEST APOCALYPSE EVER. I expected more from the Abrams/Kripke dream team, but instead we get some of the worst dialogue I’ve ever been subjected to. It’s quickly becoming the 50 Shades of the apocalypse genre. It reminds me of Jericho but less awesome, and I loved Jericho so I really want to love Revolution, but my gut tells me I’m in for a disappointment. They made 4 episodes off the bat so I’ll give them until episode 5 to see if the new episodes fix some of the Too Stupid To Live problems the characters have amassed and for the love of god dirty the characters up. It’s the apocalypse and there’s no running water and Katniss Charlie looks like she just stepped out of a shampoo commercial.

What I’m trying to say is, a lot has happened, but I’ve missed you. All of you. A lot.

I’m sorry I’ve been horribly absent. I’m not 100% but I’m ready to come crawling home, wild oats sown. Catch me up on the good and the bad in the comments. How are you?

  1. I thoroughly enjoy your blog posts and I consciously put into practice your concepts as they allow us to..

  2. I totally feel you. But glad to see you back, as we haven’t chatted on Twitter much, either. I’ve been in home remodel world so that’s taken precedence over a lot of other things, as well as some other personal stuff.

I watched the first episode of Revolution and felt the same way you did. No character chemistry and dry dialogue. What. I expected way more. However, I am totally loving The Mindy Project! =)

  3. Welcome back! I hope you’re feeling better (boo to needles!) and congrats on such amazing wordcount. I haven’t watched Revolution, but everyone seems to have the same criticisms. It’s like seeing those Middle Ages period piece films and everyone’s teeth are completely straight and pearly white. Yeah, uh, right! I wrote a TON this summer doing two Camp NaNoWriMos and now I’m just revising and editing like a crazy woman.

  4. Great to see you blogging again! We love Alphas at our house, mostly because of one character — you can probably guess who. As for Revolution, I watched two episodes (I’m so glad you mentioned the CLEAN thing – jeez) and deleted it from my serial recordings on my PVR.

Have you seen Arrow? The pilot was quite promising — more than I’d expect from a TV superhero show.

  5. THANK YOU for mentioning her hair. One of the things about Revolution that bothered me from the go… Why is the bad army in those old civil war type tents? I mean, tent technology has come a long way and you don’t need electricity to use it!

And seriously? 16,000 words? Wow! I bow to your wordage!

  6. Hey! Welcome back! You’ve been missed! (will have to check out Alphas – haven’t seen that one yet)

  7. I agree with you completely about Revolution and about Alphas. We’re also trying to watch Last Resort – curious to see where its heading. I like the characters a lot so far, though. But I can’t believe you didn’t mention Dr. Who! It’s been a disappointing season as far as the writing for that show. There was one great episode, but most of them have been so full of holes its disgusting. But I’ll keep watching for a while more anyway.

    • I’m not familiar with Last Resort, will have to check it out!

Honestly? I don’t really like the new doctor that much and haven’t watched most of the new doctor’s seasons. I will probably watch them sometime, but not right now.

  8. Welcome back! I hope you’re feeling better and I’m terribly jealous of your 16k word weekend. :-)

  9. Sommer!!! It’s good to hear from you. Sorry about the burnout, but glad you’ve recharged and returned.
    16,000 in one weekend? Whoa…
Leverage is awesome. So is Alphas. Revolution – yeah, it’s not doing it for me either. I think it gets one more viewing from me then I’m giving up.
    Welcome back.

    • Alex!!!! My super favorite blogger. You’re one of the few blogs I read during my hiatus. I missed talking to you though :-)

The 16,000 word weekend was AWESOME. I was working on a short story project and I’d camped out in my local coffee shop from 8am until they closed at 10pm two days in a row. I have never had so much coffee in my entire life.

Clearly not something I can do often but it was a whirlwind of fun when I did it.
