Writing
- We couldn’t go a whole month without some new super drama roaring its ugly head between readers and writers and agents and parents and whatever. (This response is the funniest thing I’ve ever read though, fo’ real.) I’m declaring 2012 the year without super drama. Positive Outlooks and Bestest Friends for Everyone! I SAID GO MAKE SOME FRIENDS.
- Over at Brave New Worlds – a New Year’s Resolution I think we can all need to get behind: The power of positive thinking.
- Meanwhile, Jen at Jen’s Bookshelf wonders about the emotional side effects our books have on our readers and whether or not Stephen King has nightmares.
- Summer Frey wrote a very honest post on a topic few of us want to even discuss- putting the dream of publishing on a shelf.
- Delilah says “The Creative Cycle Will Kill You“
- I could listen to Malinda Lo talk about anything, but today she teaches about Being Conscious About Gender and it’s a really good read.
- Jim C. Hines wrote this piece about putting rape scenes in your story – why you shouldn’t do it (unless you know what you’re doing) and why so many of them in books right now are terrible and send the worst messages. My first reaction was one of discomfort – is this really happening? – until I realized that the book I’m reading right now and the book I recently finished both featured rape and attempted rape in the storyline.
- 25 Things Writers Should Stop Doing
Books
- YA Confidential discusses talking about the digital age in your books -Twitter and Facebook and blogging and lists some great YA books that tackle social media head on.
Blogging
- Lydia Kang, one of my favorite bloggers in the whole world, talks about the “What Factor” of blogging and then follows up later with an awesome and creepy post about Prions which I think Claudie will love as much as I did.
- Sort of blogging – sort of – Pinterest Tips for Writers!
All That Other Stuff
- Mary Robinette Kowel has launched a great idea: The Month of Letter Writing (like, real letters. With stamps. And mailboxes nailed to the front of your house.) If you were around last Valentine’s Day, you can already guess the announcement I’m going to make on Monday, so you can see how excited I am about February being the Month of Letter Writing.

FRIENDS FOR EVERYONE!!!

When did your hair go red? Looks gerat!
And I read all 5 days in the life of a writer (whose name escapes me)–thank for the link. They were hilarious!
Off to lead a drama free year and make friends with everyone.
*passes out candy in cheap bribery attempt to make friends*
Oh now you know my vain little secret – I alter my hair color all the time. It’s naturally blond (like in the photo at the top right) and sometimes I even dye it back to that. It was red a couple of weeks ago when I took this picture. Now it is a dark brown with a little bit of reddish in it because I dyed it on top of red. Whenever I’m feeling frustrated or bad about something I dye my hair – it is something I can have some control over when I have no control!
(Also I am vain and like pretty things. Like my hair.)
Thanks for linking to our post!
Thanks for being awesome!
News fest! I read Summer’s post about focusing on nursing right now instead of writing. And I guess I’ve missed all the drama. Good!
I’ve stayed clear of the super drama, I only know of it happening from Tweets and response blog posts. 2012 is the year of no drama! I will make this a mantra and have everyone repeating it! FRIENDS FOR EVERYONE.
Thanks for these updates. So much going on. I’m going to have to get my act in gear.
You’re welcome! It takes a lot of time to keep up on what’s going on and there’s so much good stuff to read. I spend way too much time just trying to keep up.
